How Do You Deal With Criticism -
Discussing Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls
How do you feel when someone criticizes you? It does not
feel good to me. I am a very sensitive woman and I take some things to heart.
But I have another side that can use non-attachment very well. I want to speak
on Derrick Rose the injured guard and superstar of our Chicago Bulls. I am a huge Bulls fan and wow is he getting
flack for not coming back and playing on his torn ACL. Derrick was injured
towards the end of April in 2012. He has
not played since. It was originally stated that he will be out 8-12 months.
This brings us to 12 months this week.
He has been cleared a few weeks ago but he said mentally he is not
ready. The Bulls team has been plagued with injuries all season. Taj Gibson, Marco Belinelli, Kirk Hinrich,
Luol Deng, and Joakhim Noah and Rip Hamilton all have had injuries that kept
them out a couple of games or even more.
Now people are saying if they have to play injured so should he. When Derrick was slam dunking, doing his
tricks, doing three point shots, creating plays he was the hero of Chicago . He has even won
MVP. Now that he is injured, although he
has been cleared, some fans are turning on him.
Who’s side are you on? When someone does not do what you deem they
should do, are you automatically right? Let’s just say he comes back and twist
that knee the wrong way and ends his career. Will he then be called dumb for
coming back so soon? I am sure the I
told you so’s will echo strong. Perhaps
he could have attempted to come back when he was initially cleared and gave it
5-10 minutes in a game and just could have seen how it worked out. There comes
a time when we have to “trust” the individual that is in it to make the right
decision. Listen, I am only 42 years old. At the age 36 I had stage 3 breast
cancer. I had chemo, went bald and a radical surgery. Scared the hell out of me.
My side effects lasted for years from that chemo. It gets better…after nearly 5 years of survival.
I had it again stage 1 this time and was diagnosed in November 2012. I am going
through chemo again and almost done with my last round. I am doing well and I
beat it and am beating it. I am a very
blessed lady. But no one can tell me
about chemo, surgeries (had 4 total from 2007-2012) and being bald but another
cancer survivor. Perhaps unless we tore our ACL maybe we don’t know how he
feels? Maybe even if you did your tear
was not as bad. I am not per say taking up for Derrick but trying to be kind of
neutral or compassionate. I have learned no matter what you do the critics are
there. We do have to develop a mechanism that trains us to ignore the critics
and trust that loud and still voice in your soul and go with your gut. Our gut
is accurate and never ever leads us astray. Someone always will have something
to say. Do you, hold your head up and do what is best for you. If there is no
you, you can’t help your family, the world and there is no more basketball to
be played.
